Optical
OPtical, only because the experts say it, to me there is very little diffence in sound quatily, because they both sound so much better then Analog

but if you get a HDMI DVD player, it will bring sound thru the 1 cable, and it can carry DVD-a and SACD thru the 1 cable, so it is a little more cleaner useing these formats
either coax or optical digital will give you the same results for the audio portion of the DVD (sourround 5.1 for example) , you will still require component video connection to your receiver so that it can switch the video/audio together
i just connect mine through the optical, and i noticed a big difference, and the receiver decodes the surround more accurate
HDMI is best

Optical is 2nd.

Coaxial is third or ties 2nd on an "all-digital" amp.

Rca is last.

All bets are off if your dvd has a fantastic onboard digital decoder and your amp is of very low quality.
